This project took place over a span of 24 weeks (2 semesters) in which I worked with an interdisciplinary team of 6 other students, specializing in electrical, mechanical and robotic engineering. 
The deliverable included a functioning prototype of a retractable steering, a button layout, a GUI interface, and dashboard design.
My subteam (interface) was responsible for the button design & layout, steering shape, as well as the dashboard interface.
The project included faculty mentors from the University of Michigan engineering department as well as Toyota engineers actively participating in weekly project reviews.
For semi-autonomous vehicles, the driver must be ready to engage with critical driving tasks when necessary. For vehicles, there may always need to be a latent function available to allow the driver to assume control in certain circumstances. The control of vehicle changing from autonomous to human opens the door to new functional concepts for the dashboard and layout of the vehicle.

Domain Exploration
To understand the problem space and what the future of autonomous vehicles could look like, the team focused on interfaces of head-up displays, exploring pros and cons and also what the ergonomics of a retractable steering could look like. 
We explored competitors and even video game interfaces and how they depict vehicle status information.

I followed a full design cycle process all the way from initial research, survey design, to the hardware and prototyping which I used the Arduino and a visual programming language, Processing, for.
Skills required for this included:
-Programming using Processing
-Hardware and electronics familiarity
-Survey design
-Information visualization techniques (for visualizing survey results)
-Competitive analysis and evaluation
-Various user research and validation methods
Learnings & Reflections
The milestones of this project were well-organized and involved bi-weekly executive summaries, Gantt charts for project process, and 2-week sprints. The combination of approaching the engineering process using a mix of agile techniques taught me about project scoping, delivering, and division across a team.
I also learned about demonstrating and gaining the ability to retain a "T" shape - diving deep into your area of expertise while still being aware of the other efforts that are part of the project.
Working with an interdisciplinary team also peaked my interest in subjects such as hardware prototyping and visual programming.
